Self Payment

Self Payment is needed when a person's insurance isn't going to cover the entire cost of treatment or will only cover part of it. In these cases, it may appear like a disadvantage but individuals actually have a much more leverage simply because they can decide on whichever program they want without the limitations from health insurance providers that so many individuals encounter. In addition, rehab facilities will often offer payment assistance for people whose only choice is self payment to help them get into treatment.

Medicaid

Certain treatment programs accept Medicaid when the individual is unable to self pay or present some other kind of private health insurance. Medicaid may only pay for outpatient and short-term rehab inside a limited amount of centers, and in this case individuals may wish to explore the self pay option and come up with up any resources they are able to to fund a more quality treatment program which will produce better results, such as a long-term residential drug rehabilitation program.

Medicare

Medicare recipients can receive rehab at drug rehabilitation programs which provide either inpatient or outpatient treatment when the program is in the network of Medicare-participating providers and with the approval of their Medicare appointed physician, who must assist in setting up the person's rehab plan. Inpatient solutions are covered through Medicare Medicare Part A, with up front costs being similar to any other kind of hospital stay, and outpatient treatment being covered through Medicare Part B.

State Financed Insurance (Other Than Medicaid)

State financed insurance other than Medicaid may be used to cover the costs of drug rehab if other forms of insurance or self payment are not a possibility. If a person doesn't have private insurance and doesn't yet know whether they might be eligible for state insurance, they should consult their Social Services office in their area to determine if they are and then apply. Most state financed insurance will handle both outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation, but usually only in the state which provides the insurance plan.

Military Insurance (E.G., Va, Tricare)

Military insurance which includes VA and Tricare does cover the costs of certain substance abuse treatment services. Detox services, outpatient and inpatient programs along with partial hospitalization are all covered by military insurance, although military members may need pre-authorization and in that case they can speak with their VA or Tricare representative. There may be some restrictions about just how long a stay in inpatient drug treatment is permitted, and all of these questions will be answered before beginning treatment so that it's clear how much time and individual can remain in the treatment center of preference.
